What We Do

Two people collecting information from trees.

Friends of the Muskoka Watershed (FOTMW) is a registered charity focused on protecting the Muskoka watershed through science-based solutions, community outreach, and policy engagement.

OUR MISSION

To identify environmental threats, develop practical science-based solutions, and connect with policy-makers to put these solutions in place. We also strive to cultivate an awareness of these threats and solutions through educational outreach within the Muskoka community.

We do this to ensure that those who live in, visit, and love the Muskoka watershed can continue enjoying this natural ecosystem forever.

PROJECTS

Science drives our solutions. We work with Trent University School of the Environment and other post-secondary institutions. As of 2025, our main projects are <ASHMuskoka>— restoring our watershed using calcium-rich wood ash — and <SALTYMuskoka>— working to reduce excessive road salt use. We also address other issues like algal blooms.

TAKING ACTION

<ASHMuskoka>

A community-wide collaboration to introduce desperately-needed source of calcium into the Muskoka environment.

<SALTYMuskoka>

Addressing the threat posed to Muskoka’s wildlife and water by reducing excssive use of road salt.

Future Projects

  • Increasing algal blooms in our lakes and rivers
  • The ongoing impact of development on our watershed
  • Flooding in and around the Muskoka region
