SALTYMuskoka

The SALTYMuskoka Community Action Project aims to raise awareness of the environmental harms of excessive road salt use in communities across Muskoka. Through education and community scientist opportunities, SALTYMuskoka provides Muskoka communities with the knowledge and tools to reduce personal road salt use.

  • Establish long term relationships with schools, teachers, and students. Test for chloride (component of road salt) levels on school property and build local awareness through community-based science projects.
  • Build relationships with lake associations and identify <Lake Stewards> to monitor chloride levels in waterways across Muskoka.
  • Communicate with lake association residents about the importance of personal road salt reduction strategies.
  • Build a network of volunteers across Muskoka to document the overuse of road salt in our communities. SALTYSupporters will start conversations with businesses and communicate our <SALTYMuskoka Pledge> to local businesses to reduce personal road salt use.
  • Visit community hubs and events with volunteers and educational materials for the local public.
  • Build conversations with large property owners and winter maintenance contractors about taking training with organizations like the Smart About Salt Council or Landscape Ontario’s ASIC – Academy of Snow and Ice Control Certification.
  • Regularly monitor chloride levels in Muskoka Bay and Jevins Lake.
